Overview
What we see, and what we do.
A gyro is a mechanical instrument spinning at high speed on small bearings, and almost everything that goes wrong with one is a mechanical problem with a mechanical fix. Noise, precession and slow erection are wear symptoms, not death sentences.
Rotor work and balancing are the parts most shops will not touch, which is precisely why they matter. An overhauled gyro that has been properly balanced runs quieter and lasts longer than one that has simply had its bearings swapped.

- My gyro is noisy on spin-up. Does that mean it has failed?
- It means it is wearing. Rumble and whine come from the bearings, and caught early that is a straightforward overhaul. Left alone it becomes precession, then an unreliable indication, then an unscheduled removal at a worse moment.
- What difference does rotor balancing actually make?
- A rotor spinning at high speed slightly out of balance loads its bearings unevenly, so the instrument runs louder and the bearings wear faster. Balancing after a bearing change is the step most often skipped, and it is the difference between an overhaul that lasts and one that comes back.
